Hair Growth Cycle

Each hair follicle functions as an independent unit.

Anagen: the longest phase of the cycle typically lasting between 2-7 years. During Anagen, active hair growth takes place due to rapid cell division causing elongation of the hair strand.
Catagen: the hair follicle detaches from its blood supply causing hair follicle shrinkage and slowed growth rate. This phase lasts approximately 2-3 weeks.
Telogen: the “resting phase” in which no active growth occurs. This phase lasts around 3 months. While the old hair is resting, the new hair starts the beginning stages of the growth cycle.

What Is the Anticipated Recovery, Downtime, and Aftercare?

Both the FUE and FUT hair transplant procedures are safe, minimally invasive, and require little downtime with a majority of patients able to return to work within 2-3 days. It is normal for patients to experience mild pain or discomfort for the first couple of days following hair transplantation. Typically these symptoms are relieved with the use of over-the-counter pain medication including Tylenol or Ibuprofen. Temporary mild swelling, bruising, and bleeding at the procedural site may occur, but this will resolve within the first couple of days. Daily activities of living may resume shortly after the procedure, however, patients are advised to refrain from vigorous exercise for about 2 weeks following both the FUE and FUT procedures. Our patients should wait at least 48 hours before washing their hair and are instructed to use a special shampoo to cleanse the sites.
