Dr. Sean Mazloom

Dr. Sean Mazloom is a top hair transplant surgeon in Sarasota and Venice and an expert in hair loss treatment. As a double board-certified dermatological surgeon with extensive experience in hair loss, he has treated thousands of patients with various forms of hair loss.

His passion for hair loss treatment persuaded him early in his career to receive comprehensive training in hair transplantation from two world-renowned hair transplant surgeons, Drs. Walter and Robin Unger.  Dr. Walter Unger, also a dermatologist, is considered by many to be the father of modern hair transplant surgery and has authored what is considered to be the main textbook of hair transplantation. This book has been the main educational source for hair transplant surgeons around the world.

Dr. Mazloom is a highly sought-after dermatologic surgeon and hair restoration expert who treats his patients in a holistic and comprehensive approach, ensuring that all of their medical, surgical, and aesthetic needs are fully met. His artistic nature, meticulous attention to detail, extensive knowledge, and experience in hair restoration and transplantation all contribute to the impressive and natural results he achieves for his patients. Dr. Mazloom emphasizes the importance of paying close attention to hair density, direction, donor density, different hair zones characteristics, graft numbers and incisional density, and shape and contour of the frontal hairline for the most aesthetic and lasting results.

As a double board-certified dermatologic surgeon, Dr. Mazloom is recognized as a top hair transplant specialist within the greater Sarasota County and southwest Florida for scalp, beard, and eyebrow hair restoration.

Common Causes of Hair Loss

Many factors can contribute to hair loss and hair thinning. Multiple causes of hair loss may exist simultaneously. Accurate diagnosis and determining the etiology of hair loss is crucial when determining the appropriate treatment regimen to yield optimal results. The following are some of the various identified causes of hair loss:

  • Genetics: Hereditary causes of hair loss include Female Pattern Hair Loss and Male Pattern Hair Loss both of which are extremely common. Both of these diagnoses are considered androgen-related forms of alopecia and are among the most common reasons that patients seek treatment for hair loss or thinning.
  • Aging: As we age, our skin naturally loses collagen and elastin which can impact the scalp. This age-related decline in scalp strength and integrity contributes to increased hair shedding.
  • Stress: Physical or emotional stress can cause a transient type of hair loss known as Telogen Effluvium. Stressors can be either physical or psychological and include childbirth, illnesses, surgeries, hospitalization, emotional stress, and conflict in interpersonal relationships among other causes.
  • Hormonal Changes: Individuals may experience fluctuation in hair growth during periods of hormonal change including pregnancy and menopause or thyroid abnormalities.
  • Autoimmune or Immune Related Conditions: Alopecia Areata is a type of autoimmune hair loss that presents with hair loss in clearly defined patches. Other contributory autoimmune conditions include Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, Dermatomyositis, Scleroderma, Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, and Grave’s Disease. Lichen Planopilaris (LPP) is also an immune related cause of hair loss that affects females more commonly than males.
  • Other Medical Conditions: Thyroid abnormalities, certain nutrient deficiencies, chemotherapy, and scalp rashes including tinea capitis and seborrheic dermatitis are among some of the other medical diagnoses linked to hair loss and thinning.
  • Local Trauma: Large scalp injuries and burns may cause temporary or permanent hair loss. Local pressure or traction on the scalp caused by tight hairstyles causes a persistent pulling force on their hair follicle contributing to hair loss.
  • Lifestyle: This includes elements of your day-to-day life such as diet, medications, certain hair grooming practices, and products used.

Hair Growth Cycle

acne treatment

The growth and proliferation of hair follicles is a cyclical process that is divided into 4 major phases: Anagen (growth phase), Catagen (transition phase), Telogen (rest phase), and Exogen (shedding phase). Each phase of the hair growth cycle has its timeline which can be affected by factors such as aging, hormonal changes, stress, nutritional status, and overall health. Each hair follicle functions as an independent unit.

  • Anagen: the longest phase of the cycle typically lasting between 2-7 years. During Anagen, active hair growth takes place due to rapid cell division causing elongation of the hair strand.
  • Catagen: the hair follicle detaches from its blood supply causing hair follicle shrinkage and slowed growth rate. This phase lasts approximately 2-3 weeks.
  • Telogen: the “resting phase” in which no active growth occurs. This phase lasts around 3 months. While the old hair is resting, the new hair starts the beginning stages of the growth cycle.
  • Exogen: the final stage of the hair growth cycle in which the hair is shed from the scalp. The average person loses between 50 to 100 hairs daily. After completion of this phase, the cycle repeats itself.

Different Types of Hair Transplant Techniques

There are various types of hair transplant options available. Your hair restoration specialist can guide you on which option is best suited for your desired results.

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) Hair Transplant

FUE hair transplant is an innovative non-surgical technique that involves harvesting small segments of tissue containing healthy hair follicles from donor sites located on the back and sides of the scalp. Once individually extracted, the “follicular units” are carefully transplanted to areas of hair thinning and balding.

Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT) Strip Method Hair Transplant

FUT hair transplant also termed the “Strip Method” is an alternative technique used in hair transplantation. Unlike FUE hair transplant where follicular units are individually harvested, the FUT method involves removing a strip of healthy tissue from the donor site located on the back or sides of the scalp. The hair follicles are then separated from the strip into multiple units for transplant in the desired areas. Patients are left with a thin linear scar at the donor site that is easily concealed with longer hairstyles.

What Are the Indications?

FUT and FUE hair transplant procedures are indicated for patients who are experiencing certain patterns of hair loss or hair thinning on the scalp, eyebrow, or beard areas. Patients may notice their hairline receding, their part becoming wider, or generalized hair thinning. Male and Female Pattern Baldness also referred to as male or female androgenic or androgenetic alopecia are the most common indications for these procedures. If patients have tried other restorative treatments for hair loss without significant improvement, hair transplant has proven to be extremely effective. There is no age bracket that defines who may undergo hair transplantation. It is a suitable option for numerous patients ranging in age from their mid-20s even into their 70s given that they are in good general health with good donor density. Patients with hair loss due to systemic, autoimmune, or inflammatory conditions may not be ideal candidates.

At REJUVA Dermatology, we take pride in individualizing patient care since each patient case is unique. This fully applies to our hair loss patients and those interested in hair restoration. Diagnosis and treatment are determined by obtaining a detailed medical history, conducting a thorough scalp or beard exam, and utilizing shared decision-making between patient and provider to optimize patient outcomes. What Are The Benefits And Risks Of Hair Transplant?

Hair loss and hair thinning can be quite distressing for patients and often contribute to lowered self-esteem and displeasure with appearance. Innovative hair transplant techniques such as FUE yield impressive aesthetic results for patients. The following are some of the many benefits of hair transplantation when done by the best hair transplant specialist:

  • Long-lasting and natural-looking results
  • Improved overall quality of life and gaining self-confidence
  • Utilizes your own hair follicles
  • Restores receding hairline
  • Increases hair volume and density
  • Reversal of excessive hair thinning
  • The procedure is safe and minimally invasive
  • Quick recovery with minimal postprocedural pain or discomfort
  • Little to no scarring in donor and recipient scalp regions

The risks involved with FUE/FUT hair transplantation include poor results, over-harvesting, damaging the existing hair follicles, poor choice of hairline restoration, incorrect angle of hair implantation, and scar tissue formation among others. However, due to the extensive experience and expertise of Dr. Mazloom and his team, and their meticulous approach, our patients see excellent, natural, and lasting outcomes. We also provide appropriate follow-up and post-care to ensure optimal patient results.

When Can I Expect To See Results?

It takes a few months to start seeing the results but typically takes a year or longer to see full results from your hair restoration procedure. We take a comprehensive approach and recommend several post-procedure products and treatments that can speed up and enhance your results.

What Is the Anticipated Recovery, Downtime, and Aftercare?

Both the FUE and FUT hair transplant procedures are safe, minimally invasive, and require little downtime with a majority of patients able to return to work within 2-3 days. It is normal for patients to experience mild pain or discomfort for the first couple of days following hair transplantation. Typically these symptoms are relieved with the use of over-the-counter pain medication including Tylenol or Ibuprofen. Temporary mild swelling, bruising, and bleeding at the procedural site may occur, but this will resolve within the first couple of days. Daily activities of living may resume shortly after the procedure, however, patients are advised to refrain from vigorous exercise for about 2 weeks following both the FUE and FUT procedures. Our patients should wait at least 48 hours before washing their hair and are instructed to use a special shampoo to cleanse the sites.

Hair Restoration for Women

Traditionally, a majority of hair restoration procedures and products have been centered around the treatment of men’s hair loss. It is important to note that many women suffer from hair loss throughout their lifetime and it can have major psychological effects for many of these patients. At REJUVA Dermatology, we recognize the psychological impact hair loss can have on patients, both men and women. We offer a variety of treatment options, both surgical and non-surgical, for the treatment of hair loss and hair thinning in women.

Hair restoration in women requires expertise and complete familiarity with various types of hair loss in females and specific techniques that are required for hair restoration in women.

Types of Non-Surgical Hair Restoration

Non-surgical hair restoration treatments including the use of Platelet Rich Plasma injections, topical medications applied directly to the scalp, oral medications, and hair growth supplements may be ideal for patients who do not feel ready to undergo surgical hair transplantation. These options are best suited for patients who are in the beginning stages of hair loss. Treatment may vary depending on the patient’s gender and specific type of hair loss.

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) & Platelet-Rich Fibrin Matrix

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has many uses within dermatology and aesthetic medicine. At REJUVA Dermatology & Vein Center here in Venice FL, we use an advanced form of PRP called Platelet-rich Fibrin Matrix (PRFM) to stimulate hair growth, promote skin rejuvenation and revitalization, and accelerate the healing process. PRP is one of the most effective and natural ways to battle hair loss. This procedure utilizes your own platelets which are obtained during an in-office blood draw to stimulate new hair growth, increase hair volume and density, and aid in the prevention of hair loss. The procedure is simple, quick, and efficient and yields significant results for patients.

Stem Cells Extracts, Exosomes and Growth Factors

At REJUVA we use the newest and most advanced hair regrowth formulas including human bone marrow and umbilical cord stem cells extracts, exosomes and hair growth factors for maximum hair growth and hair loss prevention. Exosomes are nanoparticles produced by stem cells that act as one of the body’s communication systems and deliver important biomolecules from cell to cell. They contain three times the growth factors found in stem cells. Exosomea are more than just growth factors, they carry proteins, signaling molecules, miRNA, and MRNA which help modulate downstream mechanisms associated with hair growth and hair loss prevention, fibroblast growth, collagen production, increased elastin production and overall rejuvenation. We use a comprehensive and combination approach for our hair loss patients for the most enhanced and lasting results. These can also be used in conjunction with hair transplant to enhance the results.

Hair Loss Medications

  • Minoxidil (Rogaine): This is a topical solution that is applied daily to the affected areas of hair loss or thinning on the scalp. The medication works by causing dilation of blood vessels within the scalp that feed the hair follicles and provide nutrients necessary for hair growth.
  • Low dose oral minoxidil: Similar to above except in the form of oral pills.
  • Spironolactone (Aldactone): This oral medication is an aldosterone receptor antagonist that helps to reduce the production of androgens which contribute to androgenic alopecia in females.
  • Finasteride (Propecia): This hair growth prescription medication is taken orally for the treatment of hair loss in men. This medication is a DHT blocker that is often used in the treatment of male pattern hair loss.
  • Natural Supplements: Viviscal and Nutrafol are the two popular over-the-counter hair growth supplements packed with essential vitamins and nutrients to promote new hair growth, enhance hair thickness, and reduce hair shedding.
