What is Hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis is defined as excessive sweating commonly located on the palms (palmar hyperhidrosis), soles (plantar hyperhidrosis), and axilla (underarms). Thermoregulation through sweating is the body’s mechanism to cool down and regulate internal temperature. When sweating occurs in excess without an inducible cause, hyperhidrosis should be suspected. There are many medical conditions and medications that may cause hyperhidrosis. Therefore we recommend an evaluation by one of our expert providers to rule out any underlying condition.

Hyperhidrosis can affect quality of life, cause embarrassment, and interfere with social activities.

What Are the Treatments for Hyperhidrosis?

Treatment for hyperhidrosis can be achieved by both medical and cosmetic recommendations. In more severe cases hyperhidrosis surgery may be an option. A common treatment is antiperspirants either over the counter or prescription. The active ingredient is aluminum chloride and is available in solution or pads. These should be applied at night time when the sweat glands are less active and the ingredient may better penetrate the skin. Our providers can recommend the best deodorant for hyperhidrosis. Treatment is recommended to be used nightly until results are noticed and then decreased to once weekly for maintenance. Topical treatment often only improved mild cases of hyperhidrosis.

Other prescription medications include topical glycopyrronium, an anticholinergic medication, or oral glycopyrrolate. As with all medications, there are side effects that should be discussed with your provider before initiating treatment. Botulism injections are also a treatment for hyperhidrosis by reducing the production of sweat. These injections require regular treatments every 4-6 months, but patients are often very satisfied with their results.

How Does Radiofrequency (RF) Work?

We use a specialized form of radiofrequency microneedling as an effective treatment for excessive sweating in underarms. RF microneedling uses radiofrequency energy to produce heat at the target area to achieve various results. In this case, by targeting and reducing the sweat glands in the underarms area, the excessive sweat production significantly improves.
