ReJUVA Dermatology, Vein and Skin Cancer Center is one of the few centers in the country and the only one in Sarasota County that offers the newest dual-modality (EBT and SRT) radiotherapy treatment for non-melanoma skin cancers. Our double board-certified physicians, Dr. Rasouli and Dr. Mazloom offer many advanced technologies such as this treatment in their center to provide the best possible outcome for their patients.
Electronic brachytherapy (EBT) and superficial radiation therapy (SRT) are FDA-approved non-invasive treatment options for skin cancers. More specifically, they are most effective in the treatment of basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma skin cancers, which are the most common skin cancers.
The non-surgical treatment directs radiotherapy beams superficially and locally to the affected areas to ultimately kill the cancerous cells. During the treatment, the energy only penetrates enough to treat the cancer cells and does not penetrate deep or affect the tissues or organs.
It is the accelerated growth of cancerous and abnormal squamous cells – the flat cells located near the skin’s surface. It often appears as red, scaly patches on the skin. If left untreated, SCC can become invasive and spread to other parts of the body.
It is the most common cancer with an estimated diagnosis of 3.6 million in the US and can present as red patches and open sores on the skin. Basal cells are found in the top layer of the skin, when triggered and left untreated, they can cause bleeding, pain, disfigurement, and in some rare cases, they can spread to other areas of the body.
Dr. Rasouli and Dr. Mazloom’s skin cancer treatment is unique to each patient’s individual needs. With EBT and SRT superficial skin cancer treatment, multiple short treatment sessions (each less than 2 minutes) are required to treat the cancer cells.
Unlike most skin cancer treatment options, the dual modality EBT and SRT treatment require no downtime and patients can resume their regular routine almost immediately after. Other benefits include:
