Botox 101

For those who are new to Botox, it is an injection consisting of small amounts of the drug Botulinum. Once injected, this drug paralyzes specific muscles, preventing them from contracting and forming wrinkles. Botox can calm existing wrinkles, but it is best to start the treatment as soon as you notice new lines on your face.

Botox is not only used for cosmetic purposes. Medical practitioners often use Botox to treat the following:

  • Muscle or eyelid spasticity
  • Crossed eye
  • Excessive sweating
  • Severe migraines
  • Cervical dystonia
  • Teeth grinding

Who Should Get Botox?

Botox is available for women and men over 18 years of age. We see patients from all parts of Sarasota County with fine lines and deep wrinkles, who benefit from relaxing the muscles and smoothing their skin. Botox can also be injected into younger patients (25-35) as a preventive measure when they start to notice the beginning formation of wrinkles in their faces.

Keep in mind that Botox is not recommended for people who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Let your doctor know of any allergies or medical conditions when you come in for your consultation.

The following are common areas for patients to get Botox:

  • Around your mouth
  • Between your eyebrows
  • On your forehead

If your skin has damage from the sun or other external conditions, Botox may not be a good option for you. Botox is best at treating wrinkles that form naturally or are developed genetically.

Preparing for Botox Treatments in Venice

Our doctors will examine your skin during your consultation and indicate if Botox, other facial fillers, or cosmetic lasers, will achieve your aesthetic goals. We will let you know what to expect before your first Botox injection and whether you should not take blood thinners before the treatment to reduce bleeding or bruising.

Botox sessions are quick, usually ranging between 10-20 minutes. We will first numb the area if needed, and then our doctor will make an injection into the desired area. You should avoid touching the area for 24 hours. You should notice the difference within a few days and should set follow-up treatments every four months to maintain your new appearance.
