The cause of acne vulgaris is multifactorial. Genetic factors play a significant role but other factors such as hormonal changes, the bacteria P. acnes, stress, and certain dietary habits or medications can contribute to development of acne. Acne Symptoms and Signs
Acne typically appears on the face but can also be seen on the chest, and back, which are the areas containing large amounts of pilosebaceous units. Acne appears with open or closed comedones (blackheads or whiteheads) as well as papules, nodules or cysts that may be painful and lead to scarring. The severity of acne depends on the type of acne, amount of lesions, location and presence of scarring.
At times, acne may look similar to other diseases such as hidradenitis suppurativa, rosacea, folliculitis, periorificial dermatitis or keratosis pilaris. It is important to get a proper diagnosis to begin the appropriate treatment for these conditions.
