Mohs surgery, also known as Mohs micrographic surgery, is the most effective surgical treatment option available for basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma skin cancers. Dr. Mazloom, our double board-certified physician in Mohs surgery and dermatology, has years of experience treating skin cancer. Dr. Mazloom is one of the most qualified specialists in Mohs surgery in Venice and Sarasota County. Mohs Surgery Procedure
Dr. Mazloom focuses his compassionate care on achieving the best possible outcomes for his patients. The Mohs procedure is completed in one visit, including examination and preparation, cancerous tissue removal, lab analysis, microscopic examination, and skin repair.
When performing Mohs surgery for skin cancer, Dr. Mazloom removes the cancer in stages until he completely removes all the cancerous cells. While the patient waits, the tissue goes to our highly specialized lab where our experienced pathology technician prepares the pathology slides for Dr. Mazloom to review. Dr. Mazloom then examines 100% of tumor margins which allows the removal of all cancerous cells, while sparing healthy tissue. Dr. Mazloom repeats this process until he is confident that all the cancer cells are removed. Subsequently this results in the highest cure rate while avoiding excessive surgery at the same time.
Patients are awake throughout their Mohs surgery and do not experience any discomfort after the initial numbing. We also use various techniques to minimize pain during Mohs surgery. Once the entire cancer is removed, Dr. Mazloom or our facial plastic surgeon, Dr. Brannan, will close the wound the same day. This allows the convenience of doing it all under the same roof on the same day without having to travel to different offices and potentially on different days.
